Death was on a rampage in the World, harvesting souls with maniacal glee, when an Angel arrived to summon him to the Palace. He considered ignoring the order, something heâd never done before, regardless of who was in charge. It would serve God right, after how heâd treated Deathâs request to rid the afterlife of Naveen and his little girlfriend. The anger God showed at the idea was unprecedented, almost causing Death to cower. He hadnât, of course; it wasnât in his nature to fear anyone, even the gods.
The Angel was visibly irritated, insistent. Death ripped another soul out of an old woman with a ferocity that made the Angel turn away in disgust. Yet still the winged kiss-ass didnât leave. It was very important, he said. God needed his help.
The audacity. Anger flamed in Deathâs chest and he reached for the Angel. The Angel was too quick, launching into the air before Deathâs fingers could brush his arm. He returned Deathâs furious look with one of his own.
âYou will come,â he said. âItâs an order.â Then he was gone.
Death ported around the World a few more times, culling with relish, before he finally answered Godâs call.
When heâd finished the meeting, he emerged from the Palace smirking. Heâd been right: Naveen and Tilly were causing trouble. If only God had listened to him earlier, he could have prevented this from happeningâand he didnât let that fact slip by unacknowledged.
Lucifer, the perpetual brat, was upset about the soul count. Tillyâs little stunt had left Hell short a soul, and it would have to be replaced. God had argued, citing the self-sacrifice clause in the rules, but Lucifer would have none of it. She wanted this soul, for some particular reason, and God didnât have the patience to argue.
Deathâs orders were to bring Naveen and the little human, Phoebe, to the Palace. God was finally in agreement with Death about Naveen, and was hoping Phoebeâs soul would quench Luciferâs anger. Death doubted it would; he knew Lucifer had seen the prophecy. Sheâd been the one with the book for the past few centuries, after all. Tillyâs soul was the important one. But before he could decide if he wanted to impart this knowledge on God, he was offered a reward in exchange for his services. It was what heâd wanted from day one.
Reincarnation.
